Tablelands Folk Festival - 2019

Shirley Lynn - Tablelands Folk FestivalThe 2019 Tablelands Folk Festival theme, "Weaving Languages" stemmed from the International year of Indigenous Languages. The festival sure delivered on its promise for diversity and linguistical delights - literal, musical and dance oriented activities took place over a full festival weekend. .

On the fourth weekend of October every year, in conjunction with the monthly markets, the township of Yungaburra comes alive with the longest running festival in Queensland currently in its 39th year. The festival opens with a welcome to country by Dulgabarra Yidinji elder - Uncle Laurie Padmore where this year the Giant Elder Puppet - Daniele Poidomani's Memetica creation was introduced to the festival ready for the naming, labelling and language teaching.

My afternoon started with an interview by Adam Stephen from ABC Far North. Adam had a chat about my involvement with the festival including my performances on the Friday night at the Gem Gallery and the second at the Curtain Fig Stage and I had the opportunity to talk about this year's Tablelands Folk Festival McGinty's Songwriter Competition.

Singing live on air a performance of "Life's About the Little Things" a song co-written by David and Merelyn Carter, Sam Bellamy, John Collins, Robyn Hull, Mary Harrison and Shirley Lynn. The song has been cut and is on Carter & Carter Better Day Album.

Saint Mark's Church, Yungaburra For the past 5 years the songwriter competition has been held in Saint Mark's Church. It has been such a beautiful acoustic space for the running of our songwriter competition and we appreciate the use of the church over the weekend for the songwriter competition and festival related workshops.

In keeping with the spirit of flowing some of the festival over into local activities, Shirl performed a couple of song prior to the commencement of the scheduled Saturday service.

2019 - Festival Song Circle - Stav, James Abberley, Jimmy Bay and Little Wise For the third year running now the Festival Song Circle held in the Quincan Cafe and hosted by Shirley Lynn bought together an eclectic mix of four songwriters with diversity in their lyrics, musicality and style.

What a session it was as each songwriter talked about their songs, presenting them one at a time in round robin sytle.

This year's songwriters were: Stav, James Abberley, Jimmy Bay and Little Wise [Sophie] Stav joined on stage by Warrigo.
