Shirl (Shirley Aldridge) was a country girl born on the Atherton Tablelands where her initial joy for music was nurtured and the opportunity to develop an interest as a performer began. In earlier days she played at local venues around the Tablelands.

Highlights at this time included being Runner up in Female Vocal at Tobacco Road in 1983, a finalist in the Female Vocal at Charter's Tower's Country Music Festival in 1985, and playing at local community events eg. Atherton Centenary Concert and Malanda Country Music Spectacular.
